Hey, Wake Forest, and happy weekend! My name is Avery Finch, and I’m a Wake Forest junior and writer for the Old Gold & Black. On Fridays, I’ll be taking over the OGB newsletter to help students discover fun things to do in and around Winston-Salem. Without further ado, here’s your Weekend in Winston guide, courtesy of me and my Google expertise:
FRIDAY: Sep 6
Happy Friday, Deacs, and welcome back!! Move-in was hard, sylly week was harder (on the body) and we are already starting to get quizzes. But! Hopefully your summer was relaxing enough and you are just as excited as I am to be back in the Forest. As per usual, we have a busy weekend full of plans ahead of us, so read this first newsletter of the year and get out there!
The N.C. Folk Fest *Free | 4 p.m.- Midnight
Calling all avid festival goers, folk listeners and those willing to drive all the way to Greensboro — The N.C. Folk Fest is this weekend! This is a free 3-day music festival showcasing multiple genres and artists. Here’s a link to playlist of the festival
The Barrons and The Coyotes at The Ramkat | 8 p.m.
The Barrons will be playing at The Ramkat with special guests The Coyotes.
First Friday Dinner at the Founder's Inn | 5-9 p.m.
The Founder’s Inn is hosting its First Friday $55 four-course dinner
Forsyth Gem, Mineral, Fossil, and Jewelry Show | 10 a.m.-6 p.m.
The Forsyth Gem, Mineral, Fossil and Jewelry Show is coming to the Winston Salem Fairgrounds this weekend! You can expect lapidary demonstrations, identification of minerals, geodes and vendors selling minerals and fossils, lapidary equipment, jewelry components, tools and other items.
Candle + Soap Making Workshop | 6-8 p.m.
If you are feeling crafty this Friday, Lizzie's All-natural Products is hosting a candle and soap-making workshop. You will be able to make 1 soy wax candle (that you would never dream of lighting in your Wake Forest University dorm) and will choose your own vessel and custom label. You will also be able to make and decorate your own 6 bars of soap. Free mimosas will be included!
SATURDAY: Sep 7
Happy Saturday, Deacs! Saturday football is back, It’s chilly out, fall must be coming. Today we play one of our big rivals – UVA. Wahoo-boo? I know, but I tried. Anyway, get your gold and black on and go support your fellow Deacs.
Wake Forest Football vs UVA | 7 p.m.
Wake Forest Football takes on ACC rival UVA at 7 p.m. Be there or be square. Also! Wear gold for this game in support of childhood cancer and Atrium Health Levine Children's Brenner Children's Hospital.
Rumours ATL: A Fleetwood Mac Tribute | 8 p.m.
Are you stuck in the wrong generation? Have you spent too much time with your parents? Or are you obsessed with Stevie Nicks’ 1997 Live Performance of Silver Springs/infamous jab at her ex live on stage? You're in luck – A Fleetwood Mac Tribute is coming to The Ramkat this Saturday.
Cobblestone Farmers Market | 8:30 a.m.-12 p.m.
A good old farmers market might be just what you need to clear your head after the first real week of classes. This Winston staple is located at 1007 Marshall Street SW.
Maker's Market at Kennedy's Farm | 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
Kennedy’s Farm is hosting a Maker’s Market. Enjoy 35+ vendors, locally grown flowers, permanent jewelry, and food stalls.

Happy Sunday – a day of recovery, brunch and, at ‘Work Forest,’ a day of studying and assignments. Hopefully, however, you can take some time for yourself and your friends and get out to do something today. Here are some suggestions:
