Hey, Wake Forest, and happy weekend! My name is Avery Finch, and I’m a Wake Forest junior and writer for the Old Gold & Black. On Fridays, I’ll be taking over the OGB newsletter to help students discover fun things to do in and around Winston-Salem. Without further ado, here’s your Weekend in Winston guide, courtesy of me and my Google expertise:
FRIDAY: Sep 27
Happy Friday, Deacs! It’s Family Weekend, so wrangle your parents and check out these events. Or, if you find yourself parent-less this weekend — organize your friends for some of these events. It has been a rainy week and day so get out there and do something fun.
Jolly-Trolley BYOB comedy show | 7 p.m.
The Jolly-Trolley, a moving comedy show, is back and running.
19th annual 2024 Bookmarks Festival of Books & Authors
The Bookmarks Festival of Books & Authors (the largest annual book festival in the Carolinas) is back. It spans a few blocks downtown, so you will want to check out this map. Go for books, author signings and food trucks. Learn more through the event program
Salsa dance at The Coal Pit | 7-11 p.m.
Interested in learning to dance salsa? Already know how? The Coal Pit is hosting a salsa beginners dance class from 7-8 p.m. with continued open dance until 11 p.m.
Drive-in movie- The Little Mermaid (2023) | 8 p.m.
Davie County Community Park is hosting a drive-in-movie playing “The Little Mermaid.”

The Deacs are back this week against Louisiana. Who is also back? Parents. Be on your best behavior this weekend, Deacs, and show these parents the respectable young adults that you are. But, don't forget to go support your team this weekend — however that speaks to you. Bring your parents along!

Apple Festival | 10 a.m.-4: p.m.
Calling all apple lovers! The Bethabara Park Apple Festival is back! You can expect booths with artists and artisans, live bands, colonial games, face painting and of course, lots of apples.
The 50th annual Greensboro Greek Festival | 11 a.m.-10 p.m.
Opa! The 50th annual Greek Festival will be held at the Dormition of the Theotokos Greek Orthodox Church with Greek food, desserts, music, dancing and gifts. Here’s the menu this year — yum!
Fall plant sale | 8 a.m.-2 p.m.
Become a parent yourself by purchasing a plant at the Reynolda Village fall plant sale. I know you’ll water it everyday and give it lots of sunlight and won't let it sit and rot in your room all year. Right?!
The Kernersville mini-renaissance fair
Love renaissance fairs? You're in luck. The Brewer’s Kettle Kernersville is hosting a mini-renaissance festival that will have live music, armored combat performances, magician and wizard performances, parrots, creative chefs, mead and drinking horns.
Oktoberfest Pub Crawl | 4-11 p.m.
Grab your dirndl and lederhosen and get ready for an Oktoberfest pub crawl.
